The Settlement worker in School is responsible for facilitating and coordinating activities and events that strengthen the connection between schools, families, and the broader community. In addition, the role requires collaboration and partnership with multicultural associations and established service providers across the public, private, and non-profit sectors to ensure comprehensive support for newcomer students and their families.
A) Organizational Structure
The Settlement worker in School directly reports to the RSN SWIS Project Lead and works in close collaboration with the Settlement Services and the schools in their region.
B) Dimensions
- NBMC is the bilingual, nonprofit umbrella organization for established and emerging multicultural/ethnocultural associations and immigrant-serving agencies in the province. Since 1983, NBMC has played a key advisory role to federal, provincial and municipal levels of government on issues relating to multiculturalism, immigration, newcomer settlement, retention and labour market integration. NBMC is also valued by the settlement and multicultural community as a central coordinating/capacity-building body that promotes efficiency, avoids duplication of services, and allows for an exchange of best practices and other resources through its network of organizations, contacts, partners, etc.
- NBMC is a member serving organization with 20 member organizations located in: Moncton, Saint John, Fredericton, Woodstock/Florenceville, Edmundston, Campbellton, Bathurst, Caraquet, Miramichi, Sussex, and St. George.
- NBMC works closely with the provincial government, including Immigration New Brunswick, a division of the Department of Post Secondary Education and Labour, among other departments.
- NBMC works closely with the Federal government Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada, among other departments.
- As a bilingual, umbrella organization, NBMC also works closely with networks such as the Francophone Immigration Network.
C) Duties and Responsibilities
- To welcome families to the schools in Grand Lake.
- Prepare and deliver school-oriented information sessions for newcomer students and parents.
- Coordinate settlement-oriented activities for newcomer students
- Facilitate communication and constructive relationships between school personnel and newcomer families.
- Assist with the planning and coordination of cross-cultural outreach activities and promote openness to diversity in the school.
- Participate in the development of program communication tools (website, information kit, etc.) and promote them to families.
- Write activity reports required by funders.
- Carry out any other mandated or related tasks required.
D) Qualifications and Requirements
- Minimum of 1 year of experience in a discipline deemed relevant to the position.
- Post-secondary studies in a discipline related to the position.
- An equivalent combination of education and experience will be considered.
- Proficient in standard office software and digital tools (e.g., Microsoft Office, Adobe, survey platforms).
- Strong communication and writing skills, with a high level of professionalism and attention to detail.
- Familiarity with social media management.
- Show patience and respect for newcomers.
- Advanced leadership, planning, organizational and prioritization skills.
- Able to coordinate multiple projects simultaneously.
- Capable of partnering and working with other community organizations and immigration service providers at the local and provincial levels.
- Able to exercise tact in communicating and negotiating with, influencing and serving internal and external stakeholders.
- Able to work both under limited supervision and as part of a team.
- Discretion, confidentiality and compliance with the Privacy Act.
- Flexibility and openness, ability to analyze and synthesize information.
- Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to build trusting relationships with various stakeholders.
- Able to make presentations, convey information, and plan and execute meetings and events.
- Sound judgment and conflict resolution skills in an intercultural context.
- Interest in local economic and community development and multiculturalism.
E) Performance Review
There will be a formal review annually. Informal assessments will be carried out quarterly as required. |
